The ancient pictography of Gobustan offer a glimpse into
the past. Discovered during a quarry in the 1930's, these drawings
are proof that Azerbaijan was home to one of the first civilizations.
The most ancient of these pictographs have been dated back to
sometime between the 12th and the second millenium BC.
Approximately 6000 carvings on a series of 1000 rocks have been
discovered to date. The carvings depict goats, cattle and deer
as well as people dancing and hunting.
There is also an inscription attributed to soldiers of the 12th
Roman Legion, who stayed in the region sometime in the 1th century
AD.
In 1966 Gobustan was declared a national historical landmark
in an attempt to preserve these carvings. Definitely worth a
journey!
Not too far from Gobustan, honeycombed rocks litter the earth
and rm mud pours out of mud volcanos. The landscape is impressive
to take in and one can't help wondering if the moon looks like
this close up. The warm mud is in essence the same as Fango,
which marketed for its cosmetic and medicinal purposes in health
spas worldwide. Smooth and warm, it makes for a soothing home-spa
treatment. |
